Project Overview

Lifelong Dancer
is a VR-based immersive project that explores the interweaving mechanism of physical training and autonomous hallucinations in contemporary society.

The work builds a virtual life scene around the three stages of life, presenting a highly symbolic social space. By participating and observing, the audience gradually
becomes aware of the generation process of surrogate rationality and how the body simultaneously serves as the object of
discipline and the medium for enforcing discipline in the power structure.

This multi-level perceptual experience triggers critical thinking on the body–social relationship and awakens a re-understanding of individual autonomy.

Youth

Students are compelled to run and exercise every day in the name of “fitness,” regardless of their schedules or harsh weather conditions, with any sign of protest
leading to punishment. The work adopts the classic blue-and-white color scheme of Chinese school uniforms to evoke youthful vitality, which contrasts sharply with
the monotonous, synchronized movements excerpted from the stretching section of The Ninth Set of Radio Calisthenics, thereby creating a satirical reflection on
conformity and control within the educational system.

Middle age

Many extreme companies require their employees to perform specific actions to cultivate enthusiasm. However, from an outsider’s perspective, these rituals
are often seen as superstitious, embarrassing, or even detrimental to personal dignity. In this context, Money-grabbing Dance, typically used in the
sales or service industry to symbolize earning money through taking orders, becomes the focus. The formal attire and serious color scheme of the employees
sharply contrast with the awkwardness of the dance, generating a humorous and satirical effect.

Old age

In most cases, elderly people mechanically dance to all kinds of music, regardless of the melody or its meaning. The performance features the classic black-and-red
color combination with traditional Chinese patterns, while the movements are drawn from Drunk Butterfly and set to its catchy background music.
